Stress Related Issues - Famed physician Hans Selye, MD stated over 40 years ago that, "Stress is stress." By this, he was affirming that regardless of the source of the stressor, our body responds to the effect of the stress similarly. Stress is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it has been central to our survival as a species for millions of years. Imagine our ancestors in the woods seeing a lion or tiger. This was not time to take a nap or snuggle with their honey or sit down to enjoy a sandwich. It was time to get away so the cat wouldn't make lunch out of them. They shifted their energy from these systems to their senses so they could hear the cat and see the trees and to their muscles so they could run like the wind and avoid becoming 'big cat chow'. When they got safely away, then they could return their attention to the parasympathetic nervous system based functions of digestion, sex, and sleep. We are only here today because our ancestors responded to stress appropriately back then.
Although we don't see many lions and tigers in Tustin and Orange County these days, we still have the protective stress response that we inherited from our ancestors. When the phone rings at 3 a.m. or someone slams on their brakes in front of us on the 5 Fwy or we miss a meal and our blood sugar plummets or we have any other alarming or upsetting experience, our stress response kicks in and our body acts as if it were trying to escape from the scary big hungry cat.
The neurochemical and endocrine changes that take place with stress affect all of our body's systems. Muscles tense, blood sugar drops, immune and digestive systems shut down, reproductive hormones go out of balance, the healing process and responses to inflammation are put on hold, sleep is disrupted, heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen demand increase.
For the moment, these responses may be necessary to survive an immediate threat, but allowed to continue over time they result in most of the "diseases of modern living" which we are all trying not to succumb to. Strokes, heart attacks, cancer, auto-immune diseases including lupus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis, neurological diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and dementia, sexual impotence and dysfunction, pressures toward abuse of substances and relationships. Each of these are problems can result from unrelieved stress.
The solution is usually not to change your environment and go live in a cave in the Himalayas (although that may sound enticing at times), but to reorganize your levels of internal stress so that you can function well without being thrown into a cortisol- mediated stress response by every bump and knock that comes along on the road of life.
For most of our patients, this begins with identifying and correcting internal stressors such as digestive, immune, and endocrine imbalances, identifying and eliminating sources of food and environmental sensitivities, reducing inflammatory and blood sugar issues, and re-establishing healthier lifestyle choices.
You may be amazed at how much better you will feel and how much more fun life can become again. And you will probably be around longer to enjoy it.
Cardiovascular Health - Traditionally thought of as a Men's Health Issue, "cardiovascular health" covers a lot of ground from blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm to blood quality and quantity to preventing strokes, heart attacks, and atherosclerotic placquing and blockages.
The heart is an amazing organ. Primarily a specialized muscle that pumps oxygen and nutrient containing blodd throughout the body, it is unique because it has its own electrical or nervous system which controls its rate and rhythm.
Keeping the heart muscle strong and healthy includes exercising and resting it regularly and providing it with the nutrients and cofactors necessary to restore and maintain its integrity. It also includes protecting its supply of blood and oxygen and maintaining proper blood pressure, rate and rhythm.
The vascular system (arteries, capillaries, and veins) which carries the blood through your body has its own requirements to stay healthy, hold the blood as it courses from area to area, and stay free from atherosclerotic clots and placquing. Bulges in vessel walls (aneurysms), leaks (hemorrhages), or damage to the valves in veins (varicosities) are all signs of serious biochemical, neurological and structural problems which can be prevented with a bit of care, guidance, and teamwork.
The most important individual heart related nutrients are the amino acids taurine and cysteine, vitamins B6, B12, Folic Acid, C, E, K, and Coenzyme Q10, and the essential fatty acids. You can find many of these in our online store.
Reproductive Health - Prostatitis, beign prostatic hypertrophy, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, impotence, erectile dysfunction, male climacteric… What fun we men have to look forward to as we grow older.
But it really doesn't have to be as grim as all of that. A little prevention, some good nutrition and a bit of sound advice and you can keep your sexual health strong well into what we used to consider old age. Remember that Jack Lemmon was in his late seventies when he fathered his youngest child.
We have a lot of information available to keep you healthy. Noted prostate cancer expert Larry Clapp advises (You can find his books available online) that one of the most important tips on keeping your prostate healthy is to get the right amount of bioavailable zinc throughout your life. Your prostate uses quite a bit of zinc and needs to be regularly refreshed. If you don't have enough zinc, the receptors will often fill with cadmium, a toxic metal which can cause prostate cancer.
Stress and the cortisol response (see above) can seriously interfere with your ability to make testosterone, progesterone, and estrogens. We need all three as much as the girls do, just different ratios. We can check those ratios with a simple saliva lab test and assure that you enjoy a healthy reproductive system for years to come. If you are out of balance in these areas, we can help you regain your proper healthy function.

Dr. Ennen's specialized training increases mental processing speed, focus and attention, "in the Zone" time, self-control, and coordination. Applied Kinesiology protocols and tools can identify where your physical, biochemical, and neurological performance can be improved and then improve them. This is part of why Dr. George Goodheart, the founder of Applied Kinesiology, was named as the first chiropractor on the US Olmpic Committee in 1980. Laboratory analysis and clinical nutrition can bring your body to its internal peak of strength, endurance, and skill like the expertly tuned instrument of performance that you want it to be.
